Rewriting the rules of risk and reward is the underlying theme of the session Back-Loaded Book Deals: No (and Low) Advance Contracts, Profit-Sharing and Other Innovative Business Models. Roger Cooper of Vanguard (Perseus) and Robert Miller of HarperStudio (HarperCollins) have both rewritten those rules by pioneering new contracts that give incentives to authors to take an active role in book promotion, by placing a cap on advances and offering a larger royalty. In this insightful session, Cooper and Miller will discuss their models on a panel alongside agents who negotiate with them, and sell the idea that a lower advance and a higher share of profits is the best deal for authors and publishers.
